Christmas time is almost here, and that means it’s time to start thinking about the delicious meal you may be making for your loved ones on the big day.

One of our favourite things about Edmonton is the diversity that can be found in the local community. Today, we want to bring you a little bit of our Japanese culture into your home by explaining how you can make a Japanese meal to celebrate the holidays with some of Oomomo’s very own products! Japanese cuisine is quite varied, but we are going to break down some of our favourites paired with the tools you need to create them.

Let’s get started, shall we?

First things first: We want to introduce you to a makisu.

A “makisu” is a sushi rolling mat woven from bamboo and cotton string. This handy kitchen tool is commonly used to roll sushi, and they can even help shape other soft foods and help squeeze any excess liquid out of them.

Sushi is an iconic Japanese food item, so why not try your hand at making some this holiday season?

The best part is that with a little bit of help from some of our products, you don’t need to be an expert to create perfect sushi. A sushi rolling mat will ensure that your rolls come out perfect every time!

Here’s how:

  1. Lay your mat down on a clean, kitchen counter. (You can even lay a piece of plastic wrap over your mat to keep it clean).

  2. Ensure that the dried seaweed (nori) has its rough side is facing upward.

  3. Evenly spread rice over the nori, leaving a little bit of space near the top and bottom.

  4. Choose the ingredients you would like inside of your sushi rolls and place them in the middle.

  5. Lift up your sushi mat with your thumbs at the the end closest to you and roll up to the filling in the middle.

  6. Roll and press against the length of the mat to make sure that the sushi roll stays nice and   tight.

  7. Continue to roll the sushi away from you.

Don’t worry - we didn’t forget about the oven mitt and strawberries pictured above!

Our floral oven mitt is going to help you make a Japanese-inspired strawberry shortcake. This light, fluffy and elegant cake is perfect for any occasion! In fact, it’s even sold as “Christmas Cake” in Japan.

Rather than utilizing biscuits, Japanese strawberry shortcake is actually made of 2-3 layers of soft sponge cake, accompanied by fresh strawberry slices, whipped cream filling and whipped cream frosting.

Helpful Tip: You can find a strawberry huller at Oomomo to help you easily and effortlessly remove the stems of your strawberries!

There are a number of different ways you can go about creating your very own, perfect Japanese strawberry shortcake. Here are two recipes we suggest following:

  2. Fuji Mama Recipe

Of course, you will need more than just an oven mitt to complete the process of creating a delicious shortcake!

Helpful Tip: Our mixing bowl and whip will help ensure that your ingredients mix perfectly together and create a light, fluffy cake batter. When the cake comes out of the oven, place your perfectly cut strawberries on top with a pair of pink tongs after you slice them on a blue cutting board. Finally, you’ll need a fork (or two, if you’re sharing) to taste the final product!

Another alternative way to create sushi rolls for your holiday meal this holiday season is by using a sushi mold.

A sushi mold helps you to shape your sushi. It's the ideal size for creating larger-sized sushi rolls, and even bento boxes. Here’s what to do:

  1. Take the top piece off and fill your mold with rice.

  2. Choose your fillings and place them in the middle of the sushi mold within the rice.

  3. Add some more rice over top of your fillings.

  4. Take the top part you removed and press it back down into the sushi mold.

  5. Remove your roll from the mold and lay it onto your sheet of seaweed, and roll.

Voila! After you have your sushi rolls, make sure you have a knife and cutting board handy so you can cut them up into appropriate sizes.

Finally, we are going to explain one more tool that will help you create the perfect holiday meal: Cooking chopsticks.

Yes, it’s true, chopsticks are more for than just eating a meal - they can be used to cook meals to! In fact, it’s very popular to do so in Japan.

So, what exactly can you use cooking chopsticks for?

  1. Grilling

  2. Deep frying

  3. Stir-frying

  4. Stirring

  5. Tossing salad
