Anime is loved the world over by generations of people regardless of age.
Let’s reminisce on some of the absolute classics!

Gundam

Believe it or not, Gundam first came out in 1979, featuring the nostalgic RX-78 Gundam in Mobile Suit Gundam. That makes the franchise over 40 years old! It introduced the concept of Mobile Suits through a war between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon and laid the skeleton for the Gundam chronicle.

The most loyal, diehard fans will fondly remember chapters such as Char’s Counterattack and Gundam 0083 Stardust Memory, while younger generations avidly follow newer series such as Gundam 00, Gundam Unicorn, and of course the latest Gundam franchise Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury which follows the story of Suletta Mercury- the first female main protagonist in a Gundam television anime series, taking fans on an adrenaline-filled adventure with countless battles.

Pokémon

Launched in 1996, Pokémon which is short for “pocket monsters”, is another mega Japanese franchise that needs no introduction. Many fans fondly recall Ash Ketchum starting his journey with Pikachu as a novice trainer in “Pokémon, I Choose You!” back in 1997. Out of all 25 seasons of anime, the earlier seasons remain to be the most popular since they captured the essence of “pocket monsters” as Ash gradually trained and captured new Pokémons on his adventure.

Since then, Pokémon has branched out into many console games and even has its own card game, plush toys, and nanoblocks. Did you know that the most expensive Pokémon card ever sold is the “Pikachu Illustrator”? Deemed the holy grail of Pokémon cards, it sold for a whopping $5.275 million in July 2021!

Spy × Family

Spy x Family follows the story of an agent code-named "Twilight" who is tasked with spying on Donovan Desmond, leader of the National Unity Party within Ostania. However, due to Desmond being notoriously reclusive, the only way to get close to him is to pose as a fellow parent and enroll a child in the same private school as his sons. The nail-biting excitement of living a double life that could blow at any moment has captured many fans, and a second season is set to premiere in October 2023 and an anime film, titled Spy × Family Code: White, will release on December 22, 2023.

Did you know that there is a new anime corner at Oomomo’s Aberdeen and Robson store in B.C.? There you will find a myriad of gundam model kits as well as anime figurines that you can collect!
